Incidentally, jardinieres is a french word describing a decorative planting container such as the chicken themed pot in the photo accompanying this article. I had no idea what it was so looked it up. Now I know but still can't pronounce it.

Consider installing a rain garden if you live in a drought area.
What's a rain garden? A rain garden is an area of your lawn designed to capture, retain and absorb rainwater run off. It's planted with suitable landscaping plants and becomes a permanent landscaping feature. There's more to it than that. It's also environmentally positive since it keeps runoff out of our creeks and rivers.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a free app for the iPhone that shows how to install a rain garden. This app is focused toward the northeastern area of the U.S. and includes a plant list suitable for that area.
Here's the link for the NOAA app ...
If you live in Texas or generally in the Southwestern section of the U.S. the city of Austin, Texas has a PDF that shows how to plan, install and plant a rain garden for this area. They also include a list of plants that will work well in the rain garden - at least in the Austin area.
Here's the link for the Austin PDF. You'll need the Adobe Reader to access this PDF file. A link for downloading the Adobe Reader is below.
